He's British!

The Professor writes:

Well hello. To counter this dark, wintery drudge we find ourselves wedged inside, may we offer a little splendid summer sunshine - the first single from the BRAND NEW Professor Elemental album, 'Father Of Invention'. Available right blooming now, from http://www.professorelemental.com

Quick Lamp Making Tip: Fast Nuts!

How to move 3/8 inch nuts really quickly along long lengths of threaded lamp pipe.

Orchestrions

"An orchestrion, if you’re wondering, is like a souped-up player piano from the early 1900s. These automatic music machines encased in beautiful wood cabinets don’t just play piano but also drums, bells, and pipes that can imitate violins as well as woodwinds and horns. As MP3 players get smaller and smaller, certain people are rejecting this miniaturization of the music-listening experience and full-on embracing orchestrion nostalgia."

Collector's Weekly has a lovely piece up about these automated music machines.

If you are interested in these machines I'd also suggest that you check out House on the Rock outside on Madison Wisconsin where you will find several mamoth version of these mechanica music boxes include the very steampunk Organ Room.

Circle City Aerodrome's Steampunk Art Show - Call for Submissions

Hello fellow artists and makers,

I want to share an open call for entry to the Circle City Aerodrome's first ever Steampunk Art show.  This is a juried show and will have its opening reception as part of the city-wide First Friday gallery night on Feb 1, 2013.  We really want to put our best boot forward and in order to do that we need help from all you mad scientists, inventors extraordinaire, artists and makers from all walks to submit your entries for our inaugural exhibit:  ‘Punked: Yesterday’s Tomorrows.

This is where the Circle City (Indianapolis, IN) will get its first ever taste of what we create for the past’s visions of the future and will feature fine craft and art interpretations of the Steampunk movement.  Most folk in Indianapolis have no idea or at best, a very vague idea of what steampunk is.... (You just glue some gears on it, right?)   SO, please help us introduce the amazing creativity of Steampunk Art and Craft to them ( .. and knock 'em outta their boots!)

Circle City Aerodrome is still getting over the fact that both Tempest and Jake von Slatt have agreed to help us jury this inaugural Art Show that will open  just in time for our Grand Masquerade Ball weekend.  Please please feel free to read more about them and how to apply on our website: http://circlecityaerodrome.org/index.php/masquerade/artreception

Application Postmark / email receipt deadline: Nov 26, 2012
Show Location: New Day Meadery in Fountain Square Indianapolis, IN

'International Orange', first new Firewater album in 5 years, out now

I honestly lament not finding and listening to Firewater sooner- I think my musical life suffered for their absence.  I'm a recent convert- maybe 2 years- but others have been waiting far longer to hear more of the klezmer-gypsy-rock that Todd A. and the slew of amazing musicians create.  It is powerful stuff; This is My Life, Borneo, and Some Kind of Kindness fequently gracing my speakers and playlists.  Just by the feeling it gives I'd liken them somewhere between Morphine for haunting lyrics, Gogol Bordello and Balkan Beat Box for use of Klezmer and Gypsy stylings. International Orange, out today, does not dissapoint. It's got the same verve, using hints of several genres to accomplish it's sound. Somehow even the sad, slow songs have a beat you can move to.    Link to the album on iTunes,    link to the band's site

Wet Plate Photography ... on an iPhone Back!

ambrotype iphone backWhen I started on my iPhone back project I actually researched wet plate photography, the process of putting an emulsion on glass, exposing it, and developing it into an image. How awesomely steampunk that would be!

However, though I've done a little black and white developing and printing in the distant past, I am by no means skilled in this discipline.

However, Jake Potts was thinking along the same lines and had the mad skillz to bring his project to fruition!

Click through to view his process and the results.

Custom Glass iPhone Backs

steampunk iphoneMake your own custom iPhone back glass images!

I figured out how to separate the glass panel from an iPhone back and put any image on it.

What follows is my step by step howto for transferring a laser printed image to the inside of the glass back on an iPhone 4 or 4S and the story of how I started out trying to make the back out of brass and why that turned out to not be a good idea.

The Ohio River project: BIGFOOT! The musical!

"Anyone wanna go down Ohio Rivr [sic] on a junk boat?" Asks Chicken John. He continues: "C'mon, u haven't made a mistake this big in a while". And I think: No, actually. I haven't. And the adventures I love to live (and tell) seem to be consisting of hanging around San Francisco for far, far too long.

There is is a Kickstarter, with such titillating rewards as: “Chicken John on your outgoing voicemail message” to “Crew member Jason Webley will call you up and sing a sea shanty, from the boat, backed by the Inconvenient Choir, either live or to your voicemail to be recorded forever.” (my personal favorite). This is happy mutanthood. This is important. This is art, and innovation, and music, and dammit, it’s fun. Help bring this into the world. Help us float down the Ohio, singing, with bigfoot, on a boat made of bullshit.

Shio - Otherworldly Lights

I am fascinated by techniques that involve 'growing' structures using unattended processes. It's probably because I grew up in the eco-seventies and we were all to be living in bio-engineered domes with living real grass carpeting by now!

Artist Daniel MacDonald's strongly suggests those same forms and leaves me both nostalgic and hopeful. Join me in backing his Kickstarter to build a Shio production facility!

Wayne Strattman to show at CRMI!

Remember the Borg from Star Trek? Wayne Strattman is the artist responsible for lighting up their ship with high-voltage plasma. He is the world’s most famous kinetic plasma glass artist, and on July 15th, he will have his first solo museum show at The Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation!

You'll find more information on his web site: http://www.strattman.com/products/
